Dr. Timothy Mousseau, Department of Biological Sciences, University of South Carolina,

published Oct 3, 2015:

18:30 in — “We don’t see these kind of patches of white feathers anywhere else around the world… Whats really interesting is that 2 years ago we started finding birds in Fukushima with patches of white feathers as well… The frequencies are increasing, its related to the radiation exposure… White spots, they first started noticing these white spots on these cows shortly after the disaster.”

30:30 in — “Fukushima… After 4 years of repeated sampling this is what we find: huge impacts, dramatically fewer birds in the areas of high radiation, many dramatically fewer species of birds as well.”

32:00 in — “Since it was July, I think I’ll… have to go with ‘Silent Summer’ effect… It’s really a dead zone. There are no butterflies, no birds. Very few, and it’s very, very clearly the result of the radiation contaminants.”

34:30 in — (Showing images of the radioactive contamination crossing the Pacific Ocean) “Why does it matter to you?… The reason is… it’s coming — it is coming.”

RT, Sept 10, 2015 (emphasis added): Floods may pose threat not only to radiation under Fukushima but also structures — Severe floods have hit Japan sending  tons of radiation-contaminated water from the Fukushima nuclear plant into the ocean. That has been confirmed by the facility’s operator Tokyo Electric Power. Authorities have declared the situation an emergency… Christopher Busby, who’s the Scientific Secretary of the European Committee on Radiation
Risks, says that there could be serious radiation-related consequences if the situation is not handled properly.

Chris Busby, Scientific Secretary of the European Committee on Radiation Risks: “There’s an enormous amount of radioactivity underneath the plant, the reactors are holed, and a lot of the fuel is actually in the ground. And that’s mixing with the groundwater. Well, normally what they do is they pump away, because the ground water becomes heavily contaminated, and they pump that into those big tanks. But of course if the ground water rises as a result of this rain, thenthat stuff will come out at the surface of the ground. And the second problem of course is that may affect the integrity of the structuresthe actual building structures of the four reactors and then, of course, you’re into really serious, serious nuclear nightmare territory then. It surprises me that they haven’t got enough pumps to deal with this situation. It is not a situation that’s impossible to predict. I mean all along the line we’re being told that TEPCO couldn’t possibly have predicted this, and couldn’t possibly have predicted that. Well the answer is they should have.”

Asahi, Sep 12, 2015: Bags of tainted waste swept into Fukushima river during torrential rainSeven sites for radioactive waste generated from the Fukushima nuclear crisis were submerged during torrential rain… raising fears over a possible radiation spill into the environment… At the Fukushima No. 1 nuclear plant, heavy rain caused radiation-tainted rainwater to spill into the ocean outside the plant’s harbor… Floodgates normally block tainted water from reaching the ocean from drainage ditches, but the torrential rains overwhelmed the gates twice in the pre-dawn hours of Sept. 9 and Sept. 11, the plant operator said. Utility officials said rainfall increases the radioactive level of the water in the drainage system as rainwater accumulates radioactive materials in surrounding soil when it flows in the ditches. While the drainage water usually contains less than 100 becquerels of beta-ray-emitting radioactive substances per liter, the water measured 750 becquerels per liter on Sept. 11, TEPCO officials said.

NHK, Sep. 11, 2015: Rainwater overflows from Fukushima plant … [TEPCO] said on Friday that it confirmed the leaks through video footage of the complex. The operator said the leaks occurred at 3 AM, 5:20 AM and 6 AM on Friday — for a total of more than 2 and a half hours. TEPCO is now checking the radioactive levels of rainwater samples taken from the channel…

Officials: “Trillions of becquerels of radioactive material still flowing into sea” at Fukushima — Map shows nuclear waste coming up from bottom of ocean far offshore — Japan TV Journalist: “Contaminated seawater will circulate around globe… disaster like a huge cloth expanding everyday”

Interview with NHK journalist Morley Robertson, by the Center for Remembering 3.11, published Jun 30, 2012 (emphasis added): I begin with the radiation leakage. Radiation leakage exerts a long term effect on the environment. It contaminates our food chain, the groundwater and the ocean. And the contaminated seawater will circulate around the globe. We never know how much this will impact on the environment… We’ll never able to study such issues with empirical certainty… [Due to nuclear testing] we have already accumulated “hidden losses” of radiation damage… how much is the [Fukushima] cesium in relation to that?… I believe we should enjoy delicious food rather than worrying about the food. I enjoyed the town’s delicacy… I didn’t mind about how the beef was produced or where it came from. As long as it is tasty, it is no problem for me. With regard to radiation, I have become more optimistic. My hypothesis is that it’s no use worrying about radiation. For people in Fukushima, they have a lot to worry about their future, like damaged reputation… One reason why we have relied on nuclear plants is because we didn’t know about the facts… We need to face the facts… Rad-waste from the nuclear cycle is said to be unsolvable even after 2.5 million years.

Part II of Robertson’s Interview, published Jun 30, 2012: In 1974, then PM Tanaka declared, “Let ‘s go nuclear!”… we were issued credit cards to buy electric goods to consume the extra electricity… It is OK to say that everything was just a lie… and 3/11 happened. So we must study everything. It is no longer about what to do with Onagawa nuclear power plant, Miyagi or Tohoku. This is about what to do with Japan. This has been revealed by our vulnerability to the accident… So when we talk about “disaster“, it’s like a huge wrapping cloth expanding everyday.

NHK: Morley is a journalist… working in the fields of television, radio, and lecture meetings… he studied at the University of Tokyo and Harvard University.
Robertson’s Wikipedia entry (translated from Japanese by Microsoft): In 1968, because of father’s job moved to… Hiroshima [to work] on Atomic Bomb Casualty Commission [and] undertook study of atomic bomb patients.

(Katsuhide Okada revisits the Futaba Rose Garden after the triple disaster. | COURTESY OF KATSUHIDE OKADA)
Japan Times, Mar 8, 2015 (emphasis added): Katsuhide Okada… didn’t worry much about the power plant: It was so safe, Tepco told the Futaba community… [T]he roses that Mr. Okada cultivated over a lifetime — more than 750 varieties, nearly 8,000 bushes — have perished. Still, Okada has returned to Futaba 10 times… he was interviewed on NHK appearing grim and heartbroken… Maya Moore, a former news anchor and journalist at NHK, happened to catch Okada’s interview… she collaborated with Okada and the group in putting together the book “The Rose Garden of Fukushima.”

WHYY, Apr 24, 2015 – Interview with Maya Moore, former NHK news anchor and author of The Rose Garden of Fukushima (22:15 in): It’s just poisoned wasteland. The last time Mr. Okada actually went back in there, he found baby crows that could not fly, that were blind. Mutations have begun with animals, with birds.

Several studies have linked the Fukushima disaster to mutations in wildlife and specifically discussed negative effects on crow populations:

Dr. Tim Mousseau, Professor of Biological Sciences at the Univ. of South Carolina, 2014 (pdf): We have studied biodiversity at Chornobyl since 2000 and Fukushima since 2011. Most organisms that we have examined showed significantly increased rates of genetic damage in direct proportion to the level of exposure… Many organisms showed increased rates of deformities, developmental abnormalities, eye cataracts, and even tumors and cancers.

Smithsonian, Apr 30, 2015: Birds Are in a Tailspin Four Years After Fukushima — Like the proverbial canary in a coalmine… Mousseau and his team have assembled a grim portrait… their data show that bird species and abundances are in sharp decline, and the situation is getting worse… “where it’s much, much hotter, it’s dead silent. You’ll see one or two birds if you’re lucky.”… birds such as the carrion crow… demonstrated higher susceptibility… 2012, he began capturing birds [with] patches of bleach-white feathers… the patches have a high coincidence with… cataracts, tumors, asymmetries, developmental abnormalities… By 2013, the birds… had white patches big enough to be seen through binoculars.

CIA Agent: Gov’t covering up effects of radiation; I hope public becomes more aware of threat to their health — Study: Actual radiation risks are “orders of magnitude greater” than official estimates; “Completely changes the picture… a serious public health hazard” (VIDEO)

The Yale Journal of Biology and Medicine (pdf): http://europepmc.org/backend/ptpmcrender.fcgi?accid=PMC2596024&blobtype=pdf
Direct Estimates of Low-Level Radiation Risks of Lung Cancer at Two NRC-Compliant Nuclear Installations: Why Are the New Risk Estimates 20 to 200 Times the Old Official Estimates?, Dr. Irwin Bross, Director of Biostatistics at Roswell Park Memorial Institute, 1981 (emphasis added):

Nuclear submarine workers at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard (PNS), who were exposed to low-level ionizing radiation [face] serious hazards.

The new risk estimates have been found to be much higher than the official estimates.
CDC/NIOSH refused to retract or correct the conclusion [that] “we found no positive dosage response relationships between ionizing radiation dose and mortality for any cause reported.” [They used] an incompetent way to examine this data.

[Our analysis] gives 189 lung cancer deaths per year per million persons per rem. This is over 100 times the official estimates and completely changes the picture.

PNS workers received much less than the 5 rem per year currently permitted… about 0.5 rem per year. Yet this was enough to greatly increase their risk of lung cancer.

Why does… data for the [Hanford] workers… show no lung cancer relationship? [When experts] analyzed the Hanford data they did find excess lung cancer and a doubling dose… similar to the corresponding estimate for the shipyard workers.

Estimates of risk to nuclear workers are two logarithmic orders of magnitude greater than the official risks. When the actual risks are 100 times greater, the cost-benefit calculations or permissible levels or environmental impact statements based on the official estimates cannot protect the health and safety of workers or the public.

Indeed, there are now more than 30 studies where the data show positive relationships in human populations exposed to low-level ionizing radiation.

Scientific evaluation of radiation risks [should] replace the obsolete older estimates by the newer ones. That this did not happen in the latest BEIR report suggests that official estimates are no longer a scientific product but rather a political one.

Radiation [studies] become bogged down in real or manufactured “controversies”… There is now much more than a prima facie case that NRC permits doses of radiation that are dangerous – a dose that doubles the risk of a fatal disease is a serious public health hazard.

Jay Mullen, former CIA agent and professor at Southern Oregon Univ., Oct 2013 (15:30 in):

When I was 19 years old, I was… a University athlete. I woke up one night and couldn’t move, it paralyzed me… it just baffled doctors… the Univ. of California Medical Center… determined it was the thyroid disorder that was paralyzing me… I had a thyroidectomy and as a consequence I wear what we call the Hanford necklace.

(thyroid anaplastic thyroid carcinoma gross photo)

There’s a good reason if you are an investor in the nuclear community to cover up the pernicious effects of radiation, because there’s profits in nuclear operations… There are strong ‘balance sheet’ reasons to continue the nuclear community, and therefore there’s a reason to discount the possible adverse effects of radiation.

I was in the government, but I was in the government clandestinely. I was an undercover agent for the Central Intelligence Agency in Africa in the 1970s… I understand very well that the government covers up things that might in fact be embarrassing to the government. What could be more embarrassing to the government than the fact that they hazarded their own people by their operations in the atomic community?

I would hope the American public becomes more aware of the effects that radiation can have on the public’s health.

The thing I find most distressing is the dissembling and… the contempt that the government and its contractors have had for the people who they’ve in fact affected.

The abomination of radiation contamination & it’s obfuscation continues to thwart scientific postulation and the oceanographers / biologists therefore feign discombobulation while oceanic desertification emanating from the Japanese nation and its tsunami-wrecked triple melt down nuclear ionization add to our vexation leading to improvisation of divination and other prayers for the acclimatization of all beings amidst their consternation and habitat degradation. Maybe if we employ levitation we can remove the lost melted-through cores that underwent detonation – sorry for the long dissertation & aggravation, lack of capitalization and for pointing a finger at anhialation while the population fails to fathom meaning within the sterilization & mutation & termination of our ocean brethren whilst we witness the germination of extermination & turn a blind eye to the devastation and species disintegration- perhaps we all need to find a new home in another constellation. Or wake up and attempt to save ourselves and the planet – that’s the path to our salvation. Turning away and focusing on other things ensure a continuation of species eradication. It will be our turn soon enough- what happens when the ocean is dead? Fish consumption has reached an all time high. Perhaps it’s time to undergo consideration that may save our civilization. We need an evaporation of hesitation. Some would call the cover up an Obamanation, others would say its a prime minister Abe rration.

The news media makes me sick! Why the hell don’t they tell the truth? All of us know, or should know what is going on. Like Ddduuuuuhhhhhh! Fukushima has been pouring nuclear toxins into the Pacific all day, every day for four and a half years. The news media has been told to tell everyone it is unknown what is going on. The US, especially, is afraid that once everyone knows that we are next, there will be a panic!

Lest we not forget, once the oceans die, we die…

Washington Post, Jun 19, 2015: Endangered whales are dying off in Alaska… at least nine fin whales have been found dead in the water in recent weeks… What’s more troubling is that the cause remains unknown, meaning that more of the whales could be at risk of meeting the same fate… Researchers are also investigating the death of some 25 walruses and an unusual number of seabirds… It’s not clear if the unexpected deaths are related.
http://www.washingtonpost.com/news/speaking-of-science/wp/2015/06/19/endangered-whales-are-dying-off-in-alaska-and-scientists-are-racing-to-discover-why/

Univ. of Alaska, Fairbanks, Jun 18, 2015: On May 23, [NOAA learned] that crew members on the Alaska Marine Highway System’s ferry MV Kennicott had photographed dead whales. During the next two weeks, boaters, fishermen and pilots reported floating dead whales in the area… The dead whales are now drifting along both sides of Kodiak Island… Fin whales, an endangered species, grow to 70 feet long.

AP, Jun 18, 2015: [M]arine mammal specialists speculate the animals might have eaten something toxic. UAF marine mammal specialist Kate Wynne said in a news release that it’s rare to see even one fin whale carcass every couple of years. A dead humpback whale also was found, but in a different location.

Alaska Dispatch News, Jun 18, 2015: At least nine fin whales have been found dead in recent weeks… About 25 walrus carcasses were found… an unexpected occurrence in an area where walrus tramplings are rare… In the same general area, carcasses of hundreds of seabirds and a dead whale were also found.

Kodiak Daily Mirror, Jun 19, 2015: At least nine fin whales have been found floating dead… the exact numbers are still unknown… Daily Mirror columnist Zoya Saltonstall also photographed a dead fin whale at the mouth of Afognak Bay around the last week of May. She said she was told that a “very young fin whale calf” was also found dead, floating nearby. “There were long black and white stripes along the whale’s body and it was bloated and swollen,” she said.

Prof. Kate Wynne, Univ. of Alaska marine mammal specialist: “It is an unusual and mysterious event… We rarely see more than one fin whale carcass every couple of years… It is really perplexing… They appear to have all died around the same time… We are asking people to watch for, report and photograph dead birds, fish or anything that seems unusual… So far there is no ‘smoking gun’ in this environmental mystery.”
Wynne: “The fact that the carcass are intact, it rules out killer whale predation — but other than that, we’re at a loss… It suggests that there’s something, maybe a feeding group of fin whales ran into a toxin or bio-toxin.”
http://news.uaf.edu/fin-whales-discovered-dead-near-kodiak-island/
Wynne: “It is hard to trace a source when dealing only with evidence in the aftermath.”
http://www.alaskapublic.org/2015/06/19/dead-whales-near-kodiak-island-pose-mystery/
Deborah Mercy, communications coordinator at the University of Alaska Fairbanks: “They don’t know exactly how many (whales have died). It’s a big mystery.”
Bree Witteveen, UAF Sea Grant marine mammal specialist: “It is enough to raise a concern that something unusual, something out of the ordinary is happening.”

Fukushima resident Chieko Shiina, supporter of the Fukushima Collaborative Clinic (translated by Carole Hisasue), Jan 24, 2015 (emphasis added):

At 8:00 — Already, 85 children have had surgeries for thyroid cancer, there are 112-113 children who are suspected of having cancer. When children get cancers it progresses very quickly. The former person in charge of health, Yamashita Shunichi, said it would be only a 1 in a million chance of children getting any kind of cancer because of radiation. But he was lying. Right now, it’s like 1 in 3,000 — it’s an epidemic… The head of the National Cancer Research Center estimated right now in Fukushima the rate of cancer has gone up 61 times. And yet the gov’t and also the hospitals related to the gov’t are saying this is not because of radiation… How long does the gov’t think that we’ll be silent about this? In light of this epidemic, my anger will never die down. And then to think about the parents of the small children – how worried they must be.
At 12:00 — It’s not only children. There are many things happening to adults as well. Increased rates of thyroid cancer, heart attacks, leukemia, cataracts – many, many health problems, where they are wondering… there’s something definitely wrong.
At 16:00 — I can’t forgive the gov’t, they’re murderers. This is definitely a holocaust.
At 20:00 — Media won’t report on it. Everything’s just being swept under the rug.
At 26:00 — A TV program called ‘Hodo Station’… they went to Fukushima City to interview people and they also came to my clinic… The director that made this program also made a follow up show and contacted one of the interviewees telling her, ‘We’ll be airing it soon.’ But before it was aired, it was taken off the program. This director died. This director apparently told one of the interviewees, ‘If you do hear that I died, please believe that it was not a suicide, no matter what you might hear.’ There is no truth in the media in Japan today. There are all sorts of these mysterious events happening that are still unexplained and uninvestigated.
At 43:00 — Even today the gov’t is insisting the rise in pediatric thyroid cancer rates are not due to the accident…Why are they being so insistent? It’s because the moment they admit the reality of what’s going on, then they obviously can’t restart any of the nuclear plants and must change their entire nuclear policy.

Carole Hisasue, translator (at 1:15:00): It’s disappeared from the media, it’s disappeared from people’s consciousness. There’s this big culture of denial going on outside of Fukushima. They want to pretend like it never happened. I can’t talk to my own family about radiation contamination… They don’t want to hear it. They go, ‘You don’t understand because you don’t have to live here, we have to live here.’… It’s like ‘see no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil’… just trying to ignore it and pretend life is the way it was before 3/11. It’s frightening, it’s very very frightening… [My sister-in-law] is completely brainwashed by the gov’t who says, ‘Oh no, it’s fine, fine, fine’… she believes it, even though her son suffers from a lot of nosebleeds — and I think that’s a serious problem. If I mention it to her, or even to my own mother, they get very offended. They go, ‘Oh no, no. He’s always been like that. It’s nothing to do with radiation.’ Talk about denial, it just hurts my heart.

Dr. Steve Elwart, professional engineer and expert for Dept. of Homeland Security, Dec 14, 2014 (emphasis added): With most of the media silent about the cleanup, the public may think the worst is over [at Fukushima Daiichi]… Nothing could be further from the truth… [Radioactive water is] leaking out into the ocean, allowing it to spread… around the world through ocean currents [and this has] prompted grave concerns over the impact on sea life in the area and around the world. [Officials] decided to build an “ice wall” around the reactor site… TEPCO conceded defeat and announced the efforts to construct the plug failed… As if things couldn’t get worse, less than two months ago, TEPCO once again came out with an announcement that it was having problems with the ice wall [and] was going to cease operations on the ice wall and pour cement… TEPCO President Naomi Hirose stated officials “will never give up” on the wall… debate continues over how to stop water from leaking into the ocean… outright failures continue to plague the Fukushima cleanup efforts.

NHK Transcript, Dec 26, 2014: TEPCO is still struggling to deal with contaminated water at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant.

NHK, Dec 26, 2014: New method for contaminated water may be failing — [TEPCO] has indicated that a new method aimed at tackling a large volume of highly radioactive wastewater at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant has not been entirely successful. TEPCO gave a progress report on its work to a panel of experts at the Nuclear Regulation Authority on Friday. The utility last month began pouring cement into underground tunnels filled with the contaminated water from the reactor buildings to stop the water inflow. The water is believed to be leaking into the sea… officials said that when they pumped water up from one of the pits, the water level at another pit changed. That suggests that gaps exist in the concrete-filled tunnels.

Documentary featuring radiation experts (at 6:30 in):

Dr. Alice Stewart, physician and epidemiologist: All recommendations say one big hit is more dangerous than just a little one… It’s the basis of the control of nuclear waste — if you dilute it enough, it will be safe. Well, we say dilute it and it will add to the dangers.
Jan van de Putte, radiation safety specialist: There’s a philosophy called the dilution philosophy, which means if you dilute something, then it doesn’t give any harm. But with all the knowledge we have today, we must say radiation is inducing health damage regardless of how little the doses of are. If you dilute radiation… all the health effects will only be more widely distributed. This is the only effect of this dilution philosophy.
Dr. Richard Piccioni, biophysicist: Whether you have put it all in one place or have spread it out, the total irradiation of human beings… is the same. In fact if what some researchers like Dr. Stewart are saying is true, it will be even worse.

Scientific Conference: Fukushima a global threat to human health — Radioactivity in food web off Pacific Northwest to “significantly increase” after one year — Salmon forecast to exceed Japan radiation limit — “Major concern for public health of coastal communities” (POSTER)

Conference Paper for Society for Environmental Toxciology & Chemistry (SETAC), Dr. Juan Jose Alava & Dr. Frank Gobas, Simon Fraser Univ., published Dec 1, 2014 (emphasis added):

A Marine Food Web Bioaccumulation model for Cesium 137 in the Pacific Northwest — The Fukushima nuclear accident on 11 March 2011 emerged as a global threat to the conservation of the Pacific Ocean, human health, and marine biodiversity… This accident was defined by the [IAEA] as “a major release of radioactive material with widespread health and environmental effects requiring implementation of planned and extended countermeasures”. Despite the looming threat of radiation, there has been scant attention and inadequate radiation monitoring. This is unfortunate, as the potential radioactive contamination of seafoods through bioaccumulation of radioisotopes (i.e. 137Cs) in marine and coastal food webs are issues of major concern for the public health of coastal communities… [R]eleases of 137Cs into the Pacific after the Fukushima nuclear accident are… prone to concentrate in marine food-webs… [A] simulation time dependent bioaccumulation model… showed that 137Cs can be expected to bioaccumulate gradually over time in the food web… Bioaccumulation of 137Cs was characterized by slow uptake and elimination rates in upper trophic level organisms and dominance of dietary consumption in the uptake of 137CS. This modeling work showed… magnification of this radionuclide takes place in the marine food web over time.
Reviewer Comments (Dr. Nikolaus Gantner, Univ. of N. British Columbia): “Excellent abstract and an important contribution to the session in terms of modeling efforts and bioaccumulation. Provides long-term perspective on the issue.”
Dataset for Modeling Work, published Dec 1, 2014:
Food Web CS137 SETAC
capture screen

The Fukushima nuclear accident… emerged as a looming threat to the marine biodiversity in the Pacific Ocean and human health in coastal communities. Assessment of long term consequences… should consider the extent of ecological magnification in food-webs… 137Cs cannot be ruled out as a potential bioaccumulative pollutant in regional food-webs, including… in BC waters. — Objective: To model the bioaccumulation of 137Cs in an offshore food web of the Pacific Northwest … Through the oceanic life stage cycle, Pacific salmon species are likely to deliver Fukushima associated 137Cs to the resident killer whales’ food-web in waters off the Pacific Northwest coast… 137Cs activities significantly increase in the food web after one year… 137Cs activities may achieve levels in upper trophic levels that may pose health risks in wildlife species. A rigorous monitoring program would… improve the ability to forecast 137Cs activities in marine organisms and uptake in human populations that consume sea products.

Nuclear Scientist: Fukushima an apocalyptic disaster that will haunt future generations; World now an experimental lab with humans as guinea pigs — Japan Gov’t Report: Fukushima is worse than 3/11 quake and tsunami

http://enenews.com/nuclear-scientist-fukushima-apocalyptic-disaster-will-haunt-future-generations-world-experimental-lab-humans-guinea-pigs-japan-govt-report-fukushima-worse-311-quake-tsunami

Excerpts from Op-Ed by Quamrul Haider, Ph.D., Chair of Dept. of Physics at Fordham University, Dec 4, 2014 (emphasis added):

  • The fraternity of nuclear scientists… create the impression… their extremely risky projects have been carefully thought out in every detail and are inspired by the spirit of greatest responsibility… A large section of the scientific community… believes [their accident simulations are] about as reliable as tomorrow’s weather forecast [and] that by building nuclear power plants in populated areas, the whole world becomes an experimental laboratory with human beings as guinea pigs.
  • There is always the possibility of a major disaster. The basic difference between nuclear and other industrial accidents lies in the long-range repercussions… one could forget about the havoc wrought, for example, by the explosion of a gas pipeline or the breaching of a dam… But an accident in a nuclear power plant, such as a reactor getting out of control, is capable of doing more than immediate harm. Examples of the deadly long-term effects of a reactor accident are Chernobyl and Fukushima [which] will linger on for ages to haunt the future generations. Among the survivors there will be many cases of permanent sterility, increase of genetic mutation in our progenies, and a shortened life span as a result of cancer and other radiogenic diseases.
  • [It’s] irresponsible and misleading to suppress the consequences of radiation[A]ttempts are madeto blind the people by equating nuclear accidents with more familiar hazards… an unlimited risk is falsely portrayed as a limited one and glossed over in a manner that is not only unconscionable, but also unpardonable. Thesedeceptions are further camouflaged by the way in which they are presented to the public… the far-reaching consequences of lethal radiation are overly simplified. In the post-Chernobyl and post-Fukushima era, these… do not hold water.
  • Wars, plagues, famines and natural disasters were known as the four horsemen of the apocalypse… After Chernobyl and Fukushima, nuclear accidents can be added [as another] horseman of the apocalypse
  • .
  • Critics describe nuclear reactor as one of the most dangerous technological beasts that mankind has devised and nuclear accident as “A Nuclear War without a War.”
  • The consequences can assume dimensions that do not take second place to the consequences of earthquake… and in a way actually exceeds them.

R/V Marai — Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology (JAMSTEC, administered by gov’t of Japan): The great earthquake [and] tsunami with its height of more than 10 m attacked mainly the Pacific coastline of Tohoku district and approximately thirty thousand people were killed, missing or injured. What is worse is that Fukushima No.1 nuclear power plant was seriously damaged… a gigantic radiation has been leaking to the atmosphere, land and ocean. After this record crisis, the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) requested JAMSTEC… monitor [the] level of radiation.

Japan Times, Nov 22, 2014 (emphasis added): Tepco fails to halt toxic water inflow at Fukushima… [TEPCO] admitted failure Friday in its bid to halt the flow of toxic water into underground tunnels alongside the ocean… Some 11,000 tons of highly radioactive water have accumulated in the tunnels… connected to the reactor 2 and 3 turbine buildings… according to Tepco. There are fears that this toxic buildup… could pour into the Pacific, which is already being polluted by other radioactive leaks… Friday, Tepco proposed a new technique for the tunnels: injection of a cement filler… some [highly radioactive water] would be left behind, endangering plant workers, Tepco acknowledged… [Gov’t experts] argued that Tepco should stick to the original plan and draw out all of the water. Others said giving up on it may hamper the construction of the ice wall.

Mainichi Daily News, Nov. 22, 2014: TEPCO fails to stop toxic water inflow into tunnels – [TEPCO] said Friday its attempt to stop the flow of highly toxic water into underground tunnels by the sea had failed… There are fears that the toxic water… could leak into the ocean… Removing the water is a necessary step in TEPCO’s unprecedented attempt to create a huge underground ice wall… Initially, TEPCO sought to freeze water in a section of a tunnel… The utility also took some additional measures, but they also failed.

TEPCO fail

Asahi Shimbun, Nov 22, 2014: After failures, TEPCO to use special cement… [TEPCO] plans to fill in trenches on the coastline in yet another attempt to prevent highly contaminated water from pouring into the sea… The new method will allow radioactive materials to remain in the surrounding soil, but TEPCO decided to employ the technique because it puts high priority on preventing massive amounts of highly contaminated water from leaking into the ocean. This spring, TEPCO tried to stop the water influx at the trench for the No. 2 reactor by freezing the junction of the turbine building and the trench… The company then attempted to stop the water inflow with a cement mixture, but was unable to do so…

NHK, Nov 21, 2014: TEPCO gives up on freezing tainted water – [TEPCO] is drastically changing its plan to remove highly radioactive water from underground tunnels… inundated with water from the plant’s heavily contaminated reactor buildings… TEPCO officials found that water levels in the tunnels were still changing in sync with volumes in the reactor buildings. The officials admitted to the Nuclear Regulation Authority on Friday that the tunnels hadn’t been plugged. They said they’re giving up on the plan… [NRA] commissioners asked whether the new method can really halt the inflow. They also spoke of the risk of cracks forming in cement… [O]ne commissioner asked what all the trouble over the past months was for.

IMDb – Kakusei: The Fukushima End (2014), Blondion Productions: Today the Japanese government assures its people of Fukushima’s safety and urges residents to move back. However, citizens are not convinced… Through the experiences of five individuals, this documentary reflects upon how culture has influenced the choices citizens make everyday, and how those have changed.

Kakusei Test

Closing scene from ‘Kakusei’:
Hikaru Abe, student in Soma, Fukushima (40 km north of Fukushima Daiichi) who stayed behind after his mother and younger brother evacuated: “Nothing has gotten better… The government was incapable to deal with issues, covered up information we needed and even put pressure on us. While many human errors were seen, people in Fukushima worked hard to move on with the support from all over the country. Fukushima is in the process of recovery. Our government abandoned us. Anyone, please, please save the lives of Fukushima people and children. Japan is clearly going insane. It seems like we are about to get killed. Please lend your strength to Fukushima.”

The documentary is extremely well produced. Its thoughtful subject matter, eye-catching cinematography and excellent sound design will hopefully soon be seen by millions. According to the film’s official trailer posted last year, “We are currently in need of funding to complete and distribute the film. Please lend your support and donate: http://www.blondion.com/support.”

This letter by Tomoko Hatsuzawa, a mother in Fukushima City, expresses sentiments similar to those shared by Hikaru. Hatsuzawa gave the letter to Hiroko Tabuchi of The New York Times, who also translates: “To people in the United States and around the world, I am so sorry for the uranium and plutonium that Japan has released into the environment. The fallout from Fukushima has already circled the world many times, reaching Hawaii, Alaska, and even New York. We live 60 kilometers (37 miles) from the plant and our homes have been contaminated beyond levels seen at Chernobyl… But the government will not help us. They tell us to stay put… I was eight years old when the Fukushima Daiichi plant opened. If I had understood what they were building, I would have fought against it. I didn’t realize that it contained dangers that would threaten my children, my children’s children and their children. I am grateful for all the aid all the world has sent us. Now, what we ask is for you to speak out against the Japanese government. Pressure them into taking action. Tell them to make protecting children their top priority. Thank you so much.”

Watch: Nuclear experts confront Japanese scientists — IAEA says Fukushima reactors “might still be active” long after meltdowns — “Changes completely” our idea of what happened — “Very surprised… extremely high” Iodine-131 levels — Means fission reactions lasted for weeks or months (VIDEO)

http://enenews.com/watch-international-experts-confront-japanese-scientist-iaea-fukushima-reactors-be-active-long-after-nuclear-fuel-melted-completely-change-picture-about-happened-very-surprised-about-extremel

Teruyuki Nakajima,University of Tokyo and Science Council of Japan (emphasis added):

International Expert #1 (at 38:10): My name is [inaudible] from the International Atomic Energy Agency’s marine laboratory in Monaco. I have a question regarding the Iodine-131. We were very surprised that the Iodine-131 was still discharged at very high levels in July [2011]. We had a lot of discussion about what would be the reason… You’d expect that, according to the shorter half life for Iodine-131, this would decrease much, much stronger — much faster… My briefings to member states of the IAEA was that we would expect within a few weeks there would be no more Iodine-131, but this was not true. This was still measured at high, extremely high levels in July and August of 2011. I wrote in my statement given out by the IAEA, that the reactors might still be active. There was a big discussion about this…
Nakajima: Yeah, I think the reactors still emitted the materials in… not sure about July… we have soil measurement in June, I think that still we observed Iodine-131 from the soil measurement. If that is terminated in April, we wouldn’t measure that at this point, but we still had that measurement. And still, the data are not totally thoroughly investigated. We have several remaining data we need to look at. Some people have those data, so we need to dig this kind of data set. Also, monitoring post, we had [problems?] as I told, we couldn’t use, but some are surviving and not rescued. Recently that kind of data is coming in, so we will see that data for Iodine-131…
International Expert #2 (at 43:45): I’m sorry, but I’d like to go back to the question of my colleague from the IAEA. If I understand correctly, the question is not whether… in July or August, there still were releases of Iodine. If that is the case, it would change completely the picture about the accident. That was the question that was never clarified, either by TEPCO or by [inaudible].
Nakajima: There’s some evidence [of the reactors] releasing radiogenic gas…
International Expert #2: The basic question is the following — several weeks after Chernobyl it was crystal clear there were no more releases of Iodine. If that’s not crystal clear at Fukushima, this means several weeks or months after the accident there were fission reactions. That’s the question. This question was presented, as my colleague said, at several meetings of the IAEA and that was never made clear?… That is an important question because it would change the composition of the releases…
International Expert #3 (at 46:45): I also want to [inaudible] the data. I agree with him about the calculation… Iodine had been measured in such amounts in July… Iodine from those same samples — that would allow you [Nakajima] to actually check whether this is satisfied by resuspension, as you claim…. Observations make clear, [Iodine-131 is too high by] orders of magnitude, even in the best cases — and that’s a lot…
Nakajima: We have all the data but I haven’t checked Iodine-131… But, still, we are making the data set… Maybe I could check with my file data… (Lights go on) Further questions? OK, well, thank you very much. Sorry.

TV: Unprecedented catastrophe underway at Fukushima… Radioactive material will keep coming across to North America for centuries — Gundersen: Melted nuclear fuel to bleed into ocean for decades, perhaps centuries… Entire Pacific is being contaminated (VIDEO)

Arnie Gundersen, nuclear engineer, Oct. 20, 2014 (at 13:30 in): Chronic and long-lasting radioactive releases are [ongoing]… Fukushima continues to bleed into the ocean, because those nuclear cores have melted down and are in direct contact with the groundwater. It will bleed for centuries perhaps, and certainly decades to come. So when you compare these nuclear accidents… [Chernobyl] didn’t hit groundwater… The bottom line is that accidents are getting worse… Chernobyl contaminated all of Europe – Fukushima is contaminating the entire Pacific. >> Watch presentation here

Kevin Kamps, nuclear waste watchdog, Oct. 21, 2014 (at 46:00 in): It shows what’s really been expected, that the massive releases of radioactivity — both atmospheric, that fell out on the ocean, and liquid, that are still on a daily basis pouring into the ocean — are slowly, or not so slowly, making their way to the North American coastline… This is going to keep going on for years, decades, even centuries into the future… Everyday, it’s 300 tons of radioactive groundwater that flows into the sea – every single day for the past nearly 4 years now — 300 tons of radioactive groundwater, containing a toxic alphabet soup of radioactive poisons, cesium… strontium-90, plutonium isotopes. That’s each and every day, so it is an unprecedented catastrophe for the oceans… The significance is — that is open ocean sea water. The bioaccumulation, biomagnification — we’re talking about orders of magnitude concentration of these radioactive poisons. First plankton, then go up the food chain — we are at the top of that food chain. So that’s just going to get worse the further up the food chain you go. It’s a very significant issue that the US federal government and the state governments are not paying attention to. >> Watch broadcast here

[A] high concentration of 137Cs arrived in western North America on 17 March 2011… [The] release of large amounts of radioactivity into the environment poses a global risk… [F]ission products… can be easily transported to any places in the world [and] not just be deposited locally but globally… Recently, computer simulations revealed that on average only 8% of the 137Cs airborne particles are expected to deposit within an area of 50 km around the accident site and about
50% of the airborne particles would be deposited outside a radius of 1000 km…Due to this radioactivity release into the environment, the Fukushima accident has had a tremendous impact not only on Japan but all over the world as well… radioactive material knows no national boundary…

Martin Wright, Radiation Protection Sr. Engineer at Diablo Canyon nuclear plant, 21st Annual RETS/REMP Workshop

Interview with Prof. Kai Vetter, UC Berkeley Department of Nuclear Engineering, Apr. 15, 2011 (at 3:30 in): Even for us, it’s not really clear what happened, and what is still ongoing. Overall the message is, indeed, it’s better… our information right now is it’s much better controlled than 3 weeks ago, when we did indeed see high… fairly… I mean… some… level of radiation, and since then, declining… There are still continued releases from the environment there — not as much 3 weeks ago — but there’s still some releases. >> Full interview here

AAAS, Sep 22, 2014: Fukushima radiation still poisoning insects — Eating food contaminated with radioactive particles may bemore perilous than thought… The findings from Otaki’s group are “groundbreaking,” says Timothy Mousseau, a biologist at the University of South Carolina… there have been “almost no studies” on how ingestion of radiation-tainted foods affect wildlife.

Study by University of the Ryukyus and Nagasaki University researchers, published Sep 23, 2014: [We] examined the effects oflow-level-contaminated diets… The mortality rate increased linearly in accordance with an increase of the caesium… Remarkably, the mortality rate of the Koriyama group [.04 Bq per larva] was 53% [in the first generation]… We discovered various morphological abnormalities in the surviving adults… severe and rare abnormalities shown in Figure 5might imply the effects of a contaminated diet. Only three [that ate] Okinawa leaves [1760 km from Fukushima Daiichi] showed very minor morphological abnormalities… As observed in the F1 [first] generation, various morphological abnormalities were detected in the surviving F2 [second generation] adults… very high mortality and abnormality rates [were] recorded…low-dose effects were clearly detected… results suggest that low-dose ingestion of approximately 100 Bq/kg may be seriously toxic to certain organisms… The biological effects of ingesting the contaminated diets were more severe in the F2 generation…

Mortality Rates

  • Koriyama [60 km from Fukushima Daiichi] F1 group and the Koriyama F2 group obtained from the Koriyama F1 adults were 53.0% and 79%, respectively
  • Motomiya [also 60 km] F1 group and the Motomiya F2 group obtained from the Motomiya F1 adults were 31.2% and 99%, respectively… “very small number of surviving adults”

Prof. Otaki: Many theoreticians and politicians have claimed [that Fukushima has caused] no harmful biological effects… Even worse, some biologists have claimed that there are no biological impacts… to our surprise, leaves contaminated at relatively low levels… resulted in a mortality rate of more than 50%… Moreover, the sensitivity of the offspring generation increased, resulting in very high mortality rates… it is widely believed among modern biologists that insights obtained from one biological system are largely applicable to other systems…

America Tonight, Aug. 26, 2014 (emphasis added): A sea lion has washed up… suffering repeated violent seizures, it’s in agony… “We’ve rescued about 860 animals within our rescue range. We’re seeing increased numbers in all the species we’ve cared for this year.” It’s not just sea lions — otters are also dying… large numbers of whales and dolphins are strandingon Southern California beaches, brown pelicans… dropped dead from the sky… “She had been seizing for about 30-40 minutes. Nothing seemed to be helping, so she eventually died while we were doing other stuff in here.”… “The sea lions are the sentinels of the sea. They are eating the fish that the humans are eating… There could be a time… that all the fish are contaminated by this toxin.”

Al Jazeera, Aug 26, 2014: [A] deadly neurotoxin produced by algae [is] taking the lives of many marine mammals… While the algae… are a commonoccurrence… its production of domoic acid is not… sea lions, brown pelicans, otters, whales and dolphins… have been stranding in large numbers recently… violent seizures, vomiting, permanent neurological damage and even heart failure within two days… The Marine Mammal Center [is] the largest marine mammal hospital in the world… Butthis year has been different… The Center has broken its animal admissions record… [In July, officials found domoic acid] levels had dropped… However the renewed surge in marine mammal strandings has left scientists puzzled… [As] scientists try to crack the mystery… marine mammals continue to suffer.

Shawn Johnson, director of veterinary science at The Marine Mammal Center: “A lot of animals are being exposed to such high levels of domoic acid, that they’re dying on us.They’re not responding to treatment like they often have in the past“… [The death toll] doesn’t include all of the sea lions that die before washing ashore… Nor does it account for all of the sea lion pups that will likely die without a parent. Many of the afflicted sea lions are lactating females still weaning their pups… “If there are a few hundred or even a thousand… there’s a few thousand pups that we’re probably losing… If this is happening over and over again, year after year, there is a fear that domoic acid may have a negative impact on the overall sea lion population… my biggest fear is if this happens all the time or if it’s everywhere on the West Coast… if that happens, it’s going to affect all the fish and it’s going to close down fisheries and it’ll have a huge negative impact on everyone.”

Jason Smith, Moss Landing Marine Lab: Domoic acid… has been present in all but one weekly sample since early spring…. This is also very weird… not sure exactly why it’s happening.

Clarissa Anderson, marine scientists: “A lot of the animals that are stranding right now don’t tend to feed very far off shore… So the mystery is, where is the domoic acid that they’re acquiring? We’re not measuring it in the mussels and shellfish near shore.”

Q & A with Mycle Schneider, nuclear energy consultant, IPS, June 21, 2014:

What did Fukushima represent regarding the safety of nuclear plants?

  • Mycle Schneider, nuclear energy consultant: People think Fukushima was the worst case, but it was not. It can become much worse, it is not over. This accident is ongoing, it has been for three years. There are continuous leaks of radioactivity in the environment because the radioactive inventory is not stabilised. It’s an unprecedented event in complexity, in size and in consequences. The biggest problem is that the methodology chosen by Tepco and the Japanese government appears inappropriate. We see that after three years the situation is very far from being stabilised.
  • Schneider: The amount of radioactivity that has gone into water that was leaked into the basements is estimated to be roughly three times the amount of radioactivity released during the Chernobyl accident. This issue is vastly underestimated.

“Three times the amount of Chernobyl”? Didn’t he leave off two or three zeroes? Or was it just three times “at first”? This is ongoing devastation to the ocean alone that land-bound Chernobyl had no capacity to do.

It’s good he is speaking out, but (as usual, it seems,) it is way downplayed.

Those figures are frightening, Dr Goodheart! And I try not to use such words as I think they can engender paralyzing emotions. But to give comparative figures like this makes it almost certain that we will become extinct along with most other contemporary life forms on the planet.
These ‘experts’ opinion that we have 3x the release from Chernobyl does strike me as a rather simplistic form of radionuclide accounting. You know, there was one reactor that melted down at Chernobyl and three (that the authorities are admitting to) at Fukushima…So 1×3=3. That really fills me with confidence that these ‘experts’ are really paying close attention to this crisis/catastrophe (not!).
No matter how much Kool-Aid I drink, from time to time, I cannot escape the inexorable march of logic that dictates to me that we are in deep trouble on this planet. We are loosing our food and fresh/clean water supplies. We require more and more and more energy to try to make our personal environment livable. But the production of that energy makes our planet even more uninhabitable. IMO this is the biggest underlying conundrum that faces our planet and until we can implement technologies that give us relatively cheap to free clean energy which, for really all non-destructive purposes (and most of them to) is electricity, we are poised on the edge of oblivion.
But instead I’m confronted with Big Brother telling everybody that everything is fine, just move along with your own(ed) lives.
        Crazy.

Not to mention the criminal and industrial pollution of a couple centuries. Maybe there’s a mythical creature that can unweave a hundred years of lies, that would be nice, too. Or we can rely on the oh so wonderful technology invented by clueless and compartmentalized scientists, who, if you haven’t noticed got us into this mess and seem to have no problem lying to the public about it for a stipend. wxman:
There are fundamental problems with the Palladium nano film concept.

The shear volume and quantity of radioactive material at Fuku (et al) is beyond the scope of scaling up his process.

It does have promise for contained material, yet not for the chaotic situation at Fuku, let alone what Fuku (et al) has dispersed in to the ocean and atmosphere already.

As a design engineer, I have spent decades reading of stories like this one. Few of them ever become a practical reality. Most have inherent flaws in terms of reproduceability, economics, and actual implementation.

Note that he is projecting practical application 10 years out.
So multiply that by at least 2 or 3.

Even if what he has could be made to work within a year or two, that would still be 4 to 5 years late…i.e. the genie is out of the bottle. His discovery can not put the genie back in to the bottle.
It can, at best, sterilize the genie before it ever gets out of the bottle.

      Recall:
Nuclear energy will be too cheap to meter.
Traffic jams will be a thing of the past because we will all be flying helicopters.
      Cold fusion
Every house will have a nuclear reactor to replace the furnace.
      Antibiotics will wipe out disease.
Antibiotics will get rid of all STDs.
TV will replace the classroom for education.
Computers will create the paperless office.

The Roy process worked with small quantitative amounts, really small. He said he could convert plutonium to non-radioactive lead. Don’t know what this other scientist is doing. Now if we could just have an “everywhere” machine, or just do an un-do on the food chain. I’m all for hope, and such avenues should be pursued, even if it would de-contaminate small amounts of food. But the mix of radionuclides is so complex, and contamination getting so ubiquitous, that unclear where this could go.

While I can’t comment on the efficiency of the system (and can they, really, I might ask?), palladium right now is over $800/oz., which I don’t consider prohibitive or an impediment considering the need. Not as bad as gold, or platinum. The films are nm in thickness, though I wonder how this would transalte scaled up.

“Iwamura expects the process can be scaled up within ten years, provided that a large enough budget will be available for the entire time period.”

      Abundance of Palladium:
      ◦Earth’s Crust/p.p.m.: 0.0006
      ◦Seawater/p.p.m.:
      ■Atlantic Suface: N/A
      ■Atlantic Deep: N/A
      ■Pacific Surface: 1.9E-08
      ■Pacific Deep: 6.8E-08

Personally, I’d like to see it work and scaled up quickly. Should I ask for a show of hands here who would feel that a pace of 10 years just for the research to single scale-up might be much too long? It’s going to hell pretty quickly and though it may be compared to the beginning, scaled back, now it’s still much too much at a steady state. And I’m sure the cam watchers would have an issue about my expression ‘steady state’, that it’s not that at all.

        Shaker:
The amount of palladium needed for a scaled up system would simply multiply by the scale up factor.

The nm thickness aspect wold stay the same.

The scaled up version would be a combination of larger surface area films
and paralleling a lot of systems.

Think of it like how much of a challenge it was to get small LCD displays and then the goal of trying to make TV screen sizes.

The price of palladium is likely to be a small/liveable percent of the development and manufacturing cost due to how thin the monolayer is.

Not to be a buzzkill, but my analogy is sort of like making the big screen TV while your audience is going blind.

Like I said, the genie is out of the bottle with no way to get it back in. And it does not grant any wishes. Yet many will wish they had not encountered the genie.

My wife grew up in Malibu, born Feb. 14, 1960 … first years in Bakersfield, Whittier, then Eureka … then after four years old all Carbon Beach … takes thyroid supplements regularly …

Her brother just sold his house one mile from Malibu High … “Juan de something” … apparently the school was built on some nasty fill … Rocketdyne and Hughes are nearby … as is Pepperdine etc. etc.

Not saying they didn’t get dosed from Fuku-puppy … but there may be more to this Malibu High story … … we need more information, which the EPA, DOE, US Gov’t et al are withholding …

I just posted also about my friend from Santa Barbara being ill, daughter[16] with throat/abdominal cancer, dog died of it. This is the perfect site to tell the stories of these emerging illnesses. Since the ‘real’ world is in denial, at least the people here and the ones that are curious and new here, will have the opportunity to tie radiation with sickness. Many may think it’s lame, but people just don’t get the whole ‘invisible death’ thing.

Mainichi, Mar. 25, 2014: A Cabinet Office team has delayed the release of radiation measurements from three Fukushima Prefecture municipalities, and plans to release them later with lower, recalculated results, the Mainichi learned on March 24. […] According to one source, the original measurements were higher than expected, prompting the Cabinet Office team […] to hold the results back over worries they would discourage residents from returning. The Mainichi has acquired documents drawn up in November last year detailing the radiation measurements and intended for release. The documents, however, were never made public. According to this and other sources, the measurements were taken in September last year in the city of Tamura’s Miyakoji district, the village of Kawauchi and the village of Iitate […] According to an inside source, the Cabinet Office team had noticed that measurements taken with older dosimeters distributed by Fukushima Prefecture municipalities to residents showed radiation measurements much lower than those recorded by aerial surveys. The Cabinet Office team had planned to release the latest measurements […] putting special emphasis on how low the figures were. The new results, however, were significantly higher than expected, with the largest gap coming in Kawauchi. There, the Cabinet Office team had predicted radiation doses of 1-2 millisieverts per day, but the data showed doses at between 2.6 and 6.6 millisieverts. Cabinet Office team members apparently said that the numbers would “have a huge impact” […] and release of the results was put off. At the request of the Cabinet Office team, the JAEA and NIRS then recalculated the results by ditching the assumption that people would be outside eight hours a day […] Under these new assumptions, a farmer was now expected to spend around six hours a day outdoors.

Atsuo Tamura, official on the Cabinet Office team: “We did not hold the results back because they were too high. We did so because it was necessary to look into whether the assumptions for residents’ lifestyle patterns matched reality.”

Shinzo Kimura, associate professor of radiation and hygiene at Dokkyo Medical University: “The assumption of eight hours a day outside, 16 hours inside is commonly used, and it is strange to change it. I can’t see it as anything but them fiddling with the numbers to make them come out as they wanted.”

The Oregonian, Nov. 19, 2013: […] A pocket of doubt persists despite reassurances from scientists and federal health regulators that Pacific-caught seafood is safe to eat. Health officials say Fukushima radiation doesn’t pose a public health threat in the United States. That hasn’t stopped lingering concerns. Christina Mireles DeWitt, director of Oregon State’s Seafood Research and Education Center in Astoria, said she’s noticed an uptick in worries recently. She receives about a call a week from concerned residents who’ve relayed second-hand reports of contaminated fish. Their stories aren’t specific, though, and Mireles DeWitt (who still eats seafood) hasn’t pinpointed what’s causing the increased chatter. “They’re kind of secretive,” she said. “They don’t want to give up their sources.” […]

The Oregonian, Nov. 19, 2013: Fukushima radiation in Oregon fish; Andy Norris is concerned about the impact the Fukushima nuclear disaster is having on local fish — Oregon Filmmaker Andy Norris: […] We’re pooling resources, we’re buying a community Geiger counter […] This is a huge nuclear accident. It’s not done […] 400 tons of radioactive water is being dumped into the Pacific each day […] We think it’s prudent to be doing some testing […] It’s not going to go away soon. It’s still coming over […] This is going to go on for years, if not decades. […] It’s a very sensible idea to buy this community Geiger counter […]
